10th May Getting Started in the Garden: a workshop for food growing
Saturday 10th May 10am- 1.30pm
Catherine and Sam have many seasons' experience between them of growing food at larger and smaller scales in Scottish climates. This workshop will give a broad overview to help you make the most of food growing at home, on an allotment or in a community plot. Along with lots of useful learning, you will also get a selection of seedlings to take away with you!
We will cover
- Propagation, and tips for raising strong seedlings
- Soil health and bed preparation
- Planting out and protecting your crops
- A little bit about planning and successions, so you can have a bountiful harvest throughout the summer.
There will be some handouts included, but bring a way of making your own notes as well. This is a half-day workshop including a short break, with hot drinks provided.

Are you an aspiring food grower, or a veg gardener who’d like to plan for year-round harvests? Perhaps you have started some seedlings off already this year, but aren’t sure what to plant as the season progresses.
In this half-day workshop, you’ll join Tomnaha growers Judith and Catherine, as they introduce topics such as crop planning, successional growing and how to feed and look after your soil. You’ll go away with a crop plan for your growing space for the season, whether it’s an allotment or a series of window-boxes! If you can bring a sketch of your growing space it will be helpful, but isn’t essential.
Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided.
